So, you’ve heard me mention it before – I’m officially a Canva Creator now, crafting unique templates for Canva users. If you’re curious about how to boost your Canva Creator earnings and become an official Canva Creator, let me walk you through my experience and share how I achieved my first-month earnings.
Getting Started: The Canva Starter Kit and Creative Mission
Once you’re accepted as a creator, Canva sends you an email with a starter kit to guide you through your first template designs. This kit has everything you need to know to kickstart your journey. Along with the starter kit, I received my first “Creative Mission,” which came with a $200 USD prize bonus upon completion.
The Creative Mission is essentially a brief from Canva detailing the type of templates you need to create, including the occasion and style. My task was to design 30 different templates. This number is crucial because your templates will only be showcased to Canva users once you hit the 30-template mark. These templates must be free, meaning they earn lower royalties but reach a larger audience.
Exploring Canva’s Monthly Challenges and Bonus Opportunities
In addition to the Creative Mission, Canva offers a monthly “challenge” for creators. This challenge is also a brief detailing specific templates to create, which is optional but highly recommended. Participating in these challenges not only boosts your portfolio but also earns you bonuses, which vary in amount. This way, you earn upfront bonuses in addition to the royalties you make over time. Plus, it’s a good indicator that there’s a demand for what you’re creating – after all, Canva wouldn’t brief it if there wasn’t, right?
For my first month, I had to make 30 templates for the Creative Mission and 25 for the monthly challenge, totaling 55 templates. Quite the push to get started!

Earnings Overview: How I Reached $517.07 in My First Month
I published my first templates on June 10, so my income report for June only covers about two-thirds of the month. So, how much did I earn in my very first month as a Canva Creator? A whopping $517.07! Not bad, right? It’s passive income, which means you put in the work upfront and benefit from it later. Plus, I didn’t have to provide customer support, which I would have had to do if I sold my Canva templates on Etsy. And I didn’t need to drive traffic myself; all the traffic came from Canva, which I love.
However, full disclosure: this amount is mainly due to the bonuses from the Creative Mission and the monthly challenge. These bonuses won’t be as high every month since there’s typically only one challenge per month. The bonuses I received were $250 and $200, totaling $450.
The remaining $67.07 came from my royalty income. Out of this, $13.36 was from free template royalties, and $53.70 was from pro template royalties. As you can see, pro templates generate significantly more income.
Royalties are calculated based on the number of template exports. For June, I had 468 exports – 195 for free templates and 273 for pro templates.
Looking Ahead: Future Prospects and Growth
The $517.07 isn’t my take-home pay as taxes are deducted, but I’m thrilled with my first month’s Canva Creator earnings. I can’t wait to see how things develop in the coming months. Will you follow along on my journey?
